Throughout urban India, the need for sustainable infrastructure continues to be increasingly crucial, especially for shelter homes that house a vast majority of displaced and underserved populations. As per a report published by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the number of people without homes amounted to 17 lakh, with 9 lakh being dispersed in urban areas of the country.
In a situation that is worsened by rapid urbanization and gentrification; people find themselves in dire need for secure housing. Yet, as published in a 2011 study, India has less than 700 shelters to accommodate them. Even the ones present lack access to basic amenities like safe drinking water, sanitation and durable structures. In light of the same, recent research shows how careful urban planning and improvement in built environments can increase the subjective well-being of individuals. Such predictions are particularly relevant in times where climate change and environmental destruction continue to threaten development and humanity.
Recognizing how sustainable solutions are not just a benefit but urgent necessity, Raising Green Communities aims to direct its efforts in addressing the same with a focus on refurbishing necessary sustainable infrastructure in shelter homes across identified regions in Delhi NCR, India. Through dedicated efforts, RRI hopes to provide impactful and long-term solutions that contribute towards enhancing the overall quality of life for individuals from vulnerable communities.
